Hi friend,

I just finished a live drawing session with 75 Art students and I have to tell you about it. The prompt was "train" and it turned into this! There's a yeti in the top right (thank you Janina for that idea!) and a Loch Ness sort of monster in the lake, and glowing eyes coming from a cave in the side of the mountain. For me, creating is about finding delight and surprises along the way, and way less about making a realistic drawing. And this is part of what makes up my unique creative voice (aka signature style). Your voice is as much about what you include as what you choose to leave out. I didn't realize how much story was a part of what I love about drawing until my coach pointed it out recently. Having someone else reflect something like that back to you can be so powerful. Now I'm excited to see how I can lean into that more and make my art even more "me."

Another thing we talked about in the 75 Art session today was what to do if you aren't sure you even have a unique creative voice inside of you.

Firstly, you absolutely do. I believe we all do. But it is this uncertainty (so much about creativity is having to get comfortable with uncertainty) that can stop you in your tracks.

Secondly, seeing the path to finding your creative voice can be so freeing, because when you see the path all laid out, you know it's possible, and you feel more excited to get to that point in your journey. If you haven't yet, check out my free guide that has the roadmap in it. This will help you believe that it's absolutely possible for you to make the art that only you can make.

xoxo, Genna

SIGNATURE STYLE TIP — Having a signature style makes creating lots of artwork easier.

So much of finding your signature style (aka unique creative voice) is figuring out what colors you like, what mediums you like, what type of line work you prefer, etc. Which means, when you sit down to create, you have less decisions to make and you can get into a groove with your process. Instead of wondering what type of medium or color palette you'll use, or losing time trying to decide exactly what you'll draw, you will have your signature style to fall back on. Decisions take energy, so the less decisions you have, the more energy you have for your creativity to flow.

Create a repeating pattern, see it on a real product, and begin pursuing a creative career in a moment made for pattern.

"I remember when you said, 'Oh, I knew that was yours before I even saw your name.' I thought I was going to pass out because I realized, I have found my signature style.

And it was so amazing. It sounds funny, but I'd been trying so hard that I didn't know if it was coming through. To hear somebody else say that took the stress down for me and now I can just play."

Signature Style Stories: 5 of 5 (Click here to listen to an audio version of this email). Hi Reader, This is the last email in my Signature Style Stories series (catch up here), and I want to end with what I think is both the simplest and the most radical idea I have to share: Make art you love. That's it. That's the whole strategy. I know that sounds too easy. But hear me out. Do you feel pressure to make art that's on trend? Marketable? When you sit down to create, do you find yourself...

Signature Style Stories: 4 of 5 (Click here to listen to an audio version of this email). Hi Reader, In my last email, I talked about why now is the best time in history to make money from your art. If you missed it, catch up here. Today I want to talk about why you might have a hard time taking advantage of all the opportunities we discussed in our last email. Have you ever made something that you thought was SO good, and you worried you’d never make anything that good again? So then you...

Signature Style Stories: 3 of 5 (Click here to listen to an audio version of this email.) Hi Reader, In my last email, I made the case for why your creative voice matters more than ever. If you missed it, catch up here. Let me take you back to the late '80s and early '90s. I was a kid with Print Shop Deluxe and a dot matrix printer, making greeting cards and happy birthday banners (and thinking I was absolutely incredible). There was no Procreate, no iPads, no Spoonflower, no Etsy, no...
